St Vincent de Paul Society

The mission of the Society goes to the heart of the gospel. It centres on the compassion of Jesus Christ, whose sympathy, gentleness and concern for the poor and disadvantaged is an inspiration to us all.

While we are a ministry to this parish, providing help and assistance to the poor in the suburbs of Peakhurst, Lugarno and parts of Riverwood, we are also representing a part of the Society that is active throughout the world.

Our work is confidential. We do this work by going out in pairs, visiting people in their homes, irrespective of race, colour or creed.

In meeting people face to face on their home territory we have an opportunity to get to know them personally. We see their circumstances and thereby gain a more immediate understanding of their problems.

We meet as friends each fortnight on Wednesday at 7:30pm in the Parish Centre meeting room.

There are prayers at the beginning and end of the meeting followed by a spiritual reading . We then report on and discuss visits and other activities which provides an opportunity to review what has been done and what needs to be done. The needs of our clients may be material (food, clothing, warmth, etc.), social (isolation, violence or loneliness) or personal (physical/mental health, addiction, etc.)

We have 11 very devoted members in our conference and our meetings are joyful. We also have the overwhelming support from the parish in helping us to help the needy. Any small contribution will be greatly appreciated.

With few Priests available to do the work, she travels the length of the Wilcannia-Forbes diocese in rural NSW hatching, matching, dispatching & providing pastoral care. Compass (on ABC) explores the interface between religion and life as experienced by individuals and communities - from ordinary Australians, public leaders, religious thinkers and philosophers. Our parish is Lending A Hand to the drought-stricken diocese.
